Getting ready for the party night This summer, 12 students studying in Luoyang Charity Vocational School came back to Longwan. To show what they had learned, we organized a party named Thank Charity Party. Meng Jingkan was elected general director of the party. He would be responsible for planning, hosting and instructing for the parting.
The first thing was to make performance props. Though Meng Jingkan is good at sports, he would made props carefully by himself. We visited parents and people living around to watch the performances. At 8:00 pm of July 14, 2015, the party officially opened. It was a successful party with nice atmosphere. People were reluctant to leave when the party was over. For the following days, Guangui will stay in Nanning City the 4th People’s Hospital. The costs was estimated about 8000RMB which is much for the family and Longwan. They need help and we could not leave the family alone. We hope Guangui would not be scared, nor nervous, for he is a brave boy. The children of Longwan live far away in the village. They were sent to Longwan for reasons. They would come back home for help during busy season. 10 persons followed Guanyuan to his hometown. It takes about 6 hours bus and 4 hours’ walking. We experienced rough and dangerous mountainous roads. Jiawei said, “I did not find the importance of Longwan before I visit the village. The children do not need to walk by living in Longwan.” Uncke Dayang said we just started. 10 days ago, I came here. I had imagined the place had blue sky and innocent children. 10 days later, they told me what is grateful and love. How can I describe each smiling face? I am not sure if I should be sad or take pity on them. There are a group of left-behind children. Some people had tried to protect them by not mentioning their parents. Actually, they had accepted such reality, since they could not choose what they wanted. We are here to keep accompany with them and teach them Longwan Caring Home is located in Dahua County, which was listed as one of the poorest counties in Guangxi Province. In the morning of March 25, 2015, over 40 students of grade 10 and 11 visited our children under the lead of Teacher Peng. With introductions, the students learned more about the Home. The played games with the children and performed magic. They also brought some food. Soon, they developed friendship with the children. The children were involved in magic and they asked for more performances. A student shared a piece of music with Dongdong who is mentally retarded. Though he can speak a little, he has an innocent heart. He smiled brightly. The child needs to be cared and thank the student. The student told stories to the children and some students helped to cut nails. The students raised money and bought some gifts for the children. We were moved. Their cares actually are the best gifts. Thank teachers and students from Dahua No. 2 Middle School. During their development, the children need to be inspired and accompanied by these young guys. We hope our children will become thankful, loving and responsible when they grow up. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business. This story started in 2012. That year, a charity worker MoMo came to Longwan Caring Home in Dahua County to assist teaching. Inadvertently, Longwan Caring Home teacher I-Hua Ban told MoMo about a high school freshman in the classroom : “This student is from a very poor family with many siblings. He has no money for breakfast, and basically no money for living expense. Quite often, he drinks water for breakfast so he won’t feel that much hungry. He suffers some serious illness. However, he is very determined to continue his education for a better future. He quite often came to our Longwan Caring Home to help other kids for their studies”. This student is Whei-Dung Ban. In 2010, Whei-Dung Ban was diagnosed with encephalopathy, accompanied by seizures. Because his family has no money for medical treatment, he had no choice but quit schooling and go out to work. He was already 19 when he was high school freshman. He is the oldest one in his class. However, academically he was ranked number one in his class. Later on, Whei-Dung Ban talked to MoMo and mentioned his drinking of water for breakfast. Nonetheless, he was optimistic and no complaint at all. The warm smile on his face was like sunshine in the winter. He said : “It is okay as long as I can study. Go out work without education is a big disadvantage”. His smile and persistence impressed MoMo. After MoMo went back to her home in Nan-Ning, she sent $100 yuan to Whei-Dung Ban each month to pay for his breakfast. MoMo learned later that Whei-Dung Ban applied this $100 yuan to cover his daily meals for the whole month. Longwan Caring Home is a big family consisting of orphans, single parents, and abandoned children. The normal expense of the Home is sustained by plantation, breeding, and small business. Tianming came to Longwan when he was in grade 3. His father is a migrant worker and his mother is in poor health. His grandmother does field work alone in their hometown. He is the second one among 6 children. Life is hard for the family. He and other 2 brothers live and study in Longwan. Tianming upgraded to grade 7 this year. He was admitted by No. 4 Middle School of Dahua County. He has been doing excellent in Longwan. His brother is in grade 6 and does as excellent as him. Tianming felt pressure, for his brothers are in primary school and the economic burden falls on his father alone. He said he would like to go back to school in his hometown, for the expenses would be cheaper. We are not sure about his future if he goes back to his hometown. Education is not the only way out, but it will the best for Tianming. We will create the opportunity for him. The family is in poverty and he has 5 brothers and sisters. They are getting along well with each other. Like most of the children in Longwan, he has to take some responsibilities as taking care of the younger and helping with housework. He just like a big brother who does laundry, cleaning, tutoring, etc. We often saw Tianming working in kitchen. He used to cook for the other people in Longwan when he was back from school, for we did not have a full-time cook in the kitchen. The children had to do the job themselves. Tianming was a little man at that time. In 2014, Longwan wanted to improve its environment, so the dorms and kitchen were renovated. During the construction, the children were involved in. Tianming also likes playing basketball and is good at it. He jumps higher and dribbles skillfully. He is the backbone of the basketball team. Everyone in Longwan likes him. Hope he would not give himself more pressure and would focus on study, for good days will come anyway. Guishan came to Longwan in 2010. He draws very good pictures and performs well for silent show. He also does handcrafts, plays basketball and swim. He is an orphan. His father died in 2002 and his mother died in 2004. He brother got very sick and died later. In December of 2014, his grandmother died, too. His 2 older sister got married, so he lives with his grandfather who is a blind man. Life became difficult for them. Despite of these difficulties, he is still optimistic and positive. A few days ago, he felt sick in stomach. We took him to hospital and he was diagnosed chronic superficial antral inflammation. He has been feeling stomachache since he was in Grade 5. The teachers did not expect the serious result. Guishan seemed not so optimistic when he got stomachache. Sometimes, we felt helpless to the unfair fate. Guishan had to take so much disaster and agonies. Each of the children in Longwan has to take pressure that should not have fallen on them. Each child has his own story and problem. We hope them grow up happily. The Yaos have lived in mountainous areas for generations and often lack access to adequate health and education. Lan Xiuju for example witnessed her grandparents, mother and younger sister died within a month. In their village of 130 people, half of them are children. Parents do not have the income to provide for their children. An estimated 30% of villagers sell their blood to earn money, 30% of them work in the cities and 40% of the villagers grow corn. As founder of Longwan Caring Home, I was raised in such an environment and know the importance of the education for the future of the Yao people. |
